LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team went a combined 5-1 on Sunday, winning two doubles matches and three singles matches, to complete a successful three-day tournament in the University of Georgia Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga.
Kentucky started the day in doubles action by posting two wins. Sophomores Alejandro Gomez and Panav Jha earned an 8-4 win over Eduardo Segura Mandarino and Dusan Miljevic of Georgia Tech, while fellow sophomores Ryuji Hirooka and Maks Gold teamed up to take down Juan Pablo Gutierrez and Ismael Lahlou of Georgia State 8-1.
In singles action, Kentucky received wins from Gold, Hirooka and Gomez. Gold started the action with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Suresh Eswaran of Vanderbilt, while Hirooka also took down a Vanderbilt player when he defeated Blake Bazarnik 6-3, 6-2. Gomez was the final UK victor on the day, posting a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6) win over Hunter Harrington of Clemson. Jha dropped his lone singles match, falling to No. 74 Yannick Madden of Clemson.
Hirooka led UK in the tournament, going 4-0 in singles action to take his fall record to 10-6. Gomez, Gold and Jha each went 3-1 in singles play, increasing Gomez’ fall record to 15-2, while Gold is now 5-8 and Jha ends the fall at 10-5.
