LEXINGTON, Ky. – After setting the school record in the one-meter dive last weekend in Nashville, Tenn., sophomore sensation Greg Ferrucci re-broke the record he set last week, posting a 396.25 re route to a first-place finish in both the one-meter competition and the three-meter competition.
The Kentucky men defeated both Southern Illinois and Missouri, while the Wildcat women defeated Southern Illinois, and fell to Missouri.
“We had some good individual performances,” UK head diving coach Ted Hautau said. “Greg Ferrucci increased the school record on one-meter, and Zack Peterson who dived much better and went a personal best on three meter. John Fox was solid as well.”
Ferrucci led the Wildcats to a one-two finish in the one-meter competition, with John Fox finishing in second place.
“The men divers really came through for us. They were an enormous factor in the win over Missouri.” UK head coach Gary Conelly said.
In the swimming events, Kentucky won seven of the events, highlighted by Tyler Reed’s impressive time of 20.89 in the 50-freestyle, good enough for a season-best time for the senior.
“We were a little flat and little tired, so I was very pleased with the gutsy performance by most of the team,” Conelly said.
Reed also claimed the title of the 200-freestyle, and was part of the men’s 400-freestyle relay team forKentucky that claimed first place. Reed swam a 1:40.77 in the 200-freestyle event.
On the women’s side, Christina Bechtel had another solid performance for the Wildcats, charting a win in the 200-butterfly, posting a time of 2:02.51. Bechtel also took part in the 400-medley relay, placing UK in the third position. Bechtel also took first place in the 100-butterfly, sweeping the butterfly events for the meet.
Megan Eppler swam well for Kentucky, recording two second-place finishes in the 50-freestyle and the 100-freestyle. Eppler also competed in the 200 freestyle relay leading UK to a second place finish as well.
Matt Russell also had a very impressive meet for Kentucky, finishing third in the 100-freestyle, second in the 100-breaststroke, as well as taking part in the first-place finishing team in the 400-medley relay.
“I was particularly pleased with Matt Russell’s swim in the 100-freestyle and leading of the relay.” Conelly said. “He looks like he is really going to have a great year.
“I really like the direction we are going. It is really going to be fun when we get to the later phase of the season.” Conelly added.
