LEXINGTON, Ky. – Led by sophomore Cody Martin’s 4-under par 68 in the final round of the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team surged from a tie for 12th to finish in a tie for sixth. Martin moved from a tie for 72nd to a tie for 15th, individually.
Martin paced the Wildcats with a fantastic round of 4-under par at the Forest Oaks Country Club (par 72, 7,212 yards). Martin began his round on the 13th tee and wasted little time in getting some momentum going, birdying the par four 14th to move to 1-under par on the day. Martin then moved to 2-under after a birdie on No. 4, but gave it back with a bogey on No. 5. Sitting at 1-under par, the Wildcats’ stroke-average leader birdied back-to-back holes on Nos. 6 and 7, and then birdied again at No. 11 to finish at 4-under par.
Martin got off to a hot start in 2011, finishing in the top five in each of Kentucky’s first three tournaments. His top-15 finish on Sunday is his best finish since the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational in late September. Martin’s 68 is his best round since his 4-under par 67 in the second round of the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational.
As a team, Kentucky improved by seven strokes Sunday with a 5-over par 293 to move from a tie for 12th to a tie for sixth. The UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate is the final tournament of the fall season for Kentucky. The Wildcats will tee it up again Feb. 20 in Mobile, Ala., for the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate.
“We were close this week – really close,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “This team is getting better and I am looking forward to the spring semester already. Congratulations to Cody Martin for a great final round to a solid fall season.”
Sophomore Stephen Powers improved by one stroke from his first-round 75 with a 2-over par 74. Powers finished in a tie for 27th at 5-over par overall.
Finishing third on the team was junior Chase Parker. After an opening round 76, Parker carded a 2-over par 74 to finish in a tie for 34th at 6-over par overall.
Freshman David Snyder, playing in the team lineup for just the second time in his young collegiate career, finished in a tie for 43rd after a final round 76 put him at 7-over par overall. Junior Joseph Barr shot a 5-over par 77 on Sunday and finished at 9-over par total.
The tournament, held in Greensboro, N.C., was scheduled to be a 54-hole tournament, but was shortened to 36 holes after a large amount of rain hit the Greensboro area.
Iowa State won the team championship with a 3-under par 285 on Sunday to finish at 6-over par total. Albin Choi of North Carolina State won the individual title by two strokes with a total score of 5-under par.
