LEXINGTON, Ky. – Despite totaling 22 shots the UK women’s soccer team (12-6-0, 5-5-0 Southeastern Conference) suffered a heartbreaking loss on their Senior Day, dropping a 2-1 overtime affair to the Ole Miss Rebels (7-10-1, 4-6-0).
The two teams played through a scoreless first half even though Kentucky attempted a season-high 14 first half shots to Ole Miss’ five.
The Rebels struck first almost immediately out of halftime in the 46th minute. Jenna Strother crossed a ball to Dylan Jordan who headed home her eighth goal of the season for a 1-0 Ole Miss.
Kentucky retaliated nearly three minutes later in the 49th minute when Kelsey Hunyadi fired a shot from nearly 30 yards out that beat the keeper, tying the score at 1-1. It was Hunyadi’s 11th goal this season.
The game remained deadlocked for the remainder of regulation and into overtime.
Again the Rebels didn’t waste any time out of the break striking under two minutes into the first overtime. Alix Hildal controlled the ball, dribbled past and beat the UK backline and fired a shot into the back right corner for the golden goal.
“Well we knew it was going to be a very tough game,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “When you play games at the end of the season, it comes down to the little details and the irony of it is that when we talked about Ole Miss and their style of play, and the things we were worried about, we talked about the need to win balls in the midfield. We talked about the need to track balls out of the midfield, and that they would try and cut back on us all of the time and we needed to keep them to one side. When you look at those three details, that’s exactly how the winning goal was scored. What I said to the team was we earned this. We earned this loss. That’s not to take anything away from Ole Miss, but if we don’t take care of the details, then we are going to earn a loss. That means we have to take ownership of it and we have to understand we have to do the details necessary to be successful. I didn’t think we did them well today, and therefore, we didn’t deserve to win.”
Kelsey Hunyadi paced the UK offense with seven shots, three on goal. Stuart Pope finished with four shots, her second best effort this season.
Kentucky closes out regular season action on Friday in Nashville where they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.
