LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UK women’s soccer team heads south to Mississippi looking to improve their positioning in the final sprint towards the 2011 Southeastern Conference soccer tournament.
The Wildcats (11-5-0, 4-4 SEC) open weekend play Thursday night in Starkville, Miss. taking on the Bulldogs, who are also looking to improve their position for postseason play.
Entering the weekend Kentucky sits in seventh place with 12 points, however the top seven teams are only separated by six points, with three games left in the season. A win is worth three points in the standing, while a tie earns one point.
Mississippi State (5-8-3, 2-5-1) currently has seven points in the eighth and final spot.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs 9-3-0, including a 5-1 win last season in Lexington. MSU won the last time the two teams faced off in Starkville, 2-0.
The Bulldogs have played particularly tough at home this year, posting a 4-1-2 record including wins over 20th ranked Auburn and 11th ranked Florida.
Kelsey Hunyadi leads the Kentucky offensive attack with team highs in points (24), goals (8) and assists (8). All are career-highs for the senior captain.
Freshman Kayla Price has recorded five shutouts this season, tied for second most in program history among freshmen goalies. Her 1.19 goals against average (GAA) is the second lowest among freshmen goalies in program history.
