LEXINGTON, Ky. — Coming off a three-goal thrashing of league-rival Tulsa, the Kentucky men’s soccer team wraps up its non-conference portion of the regular season, traveling to face No. 10 Indiana, with kickoff at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium set for 7 p.m. ET.
Kentucky (8-7-1, 1-4-0 Conference USA) enters the rivalry tilt with the Big Ten power coming off a 3-1 beatdown of Tulsa on Oct. 12, with the seven-day layoff the longest stretch of 2011 with UK not playing a game. UK has faced a brutal schedule through the first 16 games, traveling to California, South Carolina, Nebraska and Florida in a 15-day span that saw UK travel over 9,700 miles. On the year, UK has faced No. 9 Michigan, No. 13 Cal, No. 15 Brown, No. 3 Creighton and No. 10 Central Florida in a highly-competitive slate.
The Wildcats rode a strong outing from Matt Lodge and Charles Pettys in the three-goal game, with Lodge notching a school-record three assists and Pettys charting his first career two-goal game. UK keeper Tyler Beadle was robbed of the clean sheet when a penalty kick was called in the 88th minute for the final 3-1 margin. UK also got a goal from senior Josh Mulvany, his third of the year.
UK has been led offensively by Lodge and Tyler Riggs, with Riggs owning 10 goals and five assists, and Lodge tallying seven goals and a team-best 10 assists. Pettys, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., has added seven assists and three goals, with Mulvany adding three goals and four assists. Senior C.J. Tappel has added a goal and four assists, with Brendan Murphy and Sam Brooks owning two goals and one assist each. Beadle has a 1.62 goals-against average in 14 games, saving 39 shots with one shutout. Backup keeper Jack Van Arsdale has three saves in two starts, with a 2.00 goals-against average.
Indiana (8-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) has also played a brutal schedule, posting wins over Saint Louis, Bucknell, Rutgers, No. 16 Penn State, Butler and Michigan. IU has suffered losses against No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 14 St. Johns, No. 11 Louisville and No. 5 Michigan. IU is coming off the 4-1 pulverization of Michigan on Sunday, falling behind 1-0 before answering with four goals in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Hoosiers have been led offensively by reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Eriq Zavaleta, who owns seven goals with two assists. Alex Purdie has seven goals and two assists, while Tommy Meyer leads the team with six assists. Harrison Petts has added five assists, with A.J. Corrado owning a goal and three assists. In goal, Luis Soffner has posted a 0.83 goals-against average with 52 saves and 11 goals allowed in 13 games.
IU leads the all-time series 15-1-3, with UK’s last win coming in 1995 in Bloomington, a 1-0 result. In the last meeting between the two teams, UK posted a 1-1 draw, getting an early goal from Lodge, with IU equaling the game right out of the half. In the last three meetings, the two teams have tied twice.
The Wildcats rank throughout the NCAA and C-USA stats, ranking sixth in the nation in total goals scored with 31 through 16 games. Riggs ranks No. 12 in the NCAA in total points (25), while Lodge checks in No. 15 in total points (24). Lodge’s 10 assists rank as the second-best total in the nation.
