LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s tennis senior Eric Quigley, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, wrapped up play on Friday in the ITA All-American Championships by taking down a top-40 ranked player in a singles consolation match at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The native of Pewee Valley, Ky., used a come-from-behind effort to defeat No. 36 Louis Cant of Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State in the singles consolation second round. Cant earned the opening set 6-3 before Quigley would respond in the following two sets, earning the second set 6-4 and claiming the match with a win in the third set 6-3.
Quigley will face No. 8 Evan King of Michigan on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET in the consolation singles quarterfinals.
Quigley and fellow senior Alex Musialek, who are ranked No. 19 in the nation in doubles, fell 9-8 (9) in a tiebreaker in a doubles consolation match against No. 5 Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt of California.
Kentucky had a successful run at the ITA All-American Championships in 2010 with Quigley making it all the way to the finals, becoming only the sixth UK player in school history to play in the finals of a collegiate tennis grand slam tournament.
Quigley joined former UK greats Jesse Witten, Carlos Drada, Cedric Kauffmann, Greg Van Emburgh and Rich Benson as the only players in Kentucky’s rich history of tennis to play in the finals of one of the four collegiate grand slam tournaments. Quigley’s run to the championship was a tough one as he had to post five wins over a top-45 ranked player in the tournament.
Musialek also played in the tournament last season, defeating a top-30 ranked player in the opening round before falling to top-15 ranked Marcel Thiemann of Ole Miss in the second round.
