LEXINGTON, Ky. – Luis Orta, a junior runner for the University of Kentucky men’s cross country team, is off to a fast start to the 2011 season. The Caracas, Venezuela native won his second meet of the young season and helped lead the UK men’s team to its second victory of the season as well. The UK women’s cross country team also won the UT Invitational, its first team victory of the year.
“It’s nice to have both teams win, but what really matters is I think both teams raced better than they did in the first meet,” UK head coach Don Weber said. “It was helpful being in a dual meet. It made the competition much more personal having just blue versus orange, rather than the competition being deluted in a sea of colors in a big meet. I hope we take the personal, man-to-man type of approach in all of our meets.”
Orta, who was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Runner of the Week after finishing in first place at the Belmont-VU Opener earlier this year, cruised to a first-place finish at the Tennessee Invitational by over 17 seconds. Orta finished the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:07.34, the fourth-fastest time recorded on an 8K course in the SEC this season. As a team, the Kentucky men had six runners place in the top eight overall at the dual meet against Tennessee.
The Kentucky women’s team was led by junior Chelsea Oswald for the second-straight meet. Oswald finished in second place overall with a time of 18:13.22. Oswald was followed by senior Megan Broderick and sophomore Anna Bostrom who finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Following Orta on the men’s side was senior Walter Luttrell, senior Josh Nadzam, sophomore Stacey Eden, freshman MacKay Wilson and sophomore Adam Kahleifeh, who finished in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.
For the women, sophomores Allison Peare and Taylor Wendler, and juniors Megan Wright and Hiruni Wijayaratne finished in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.
The Wildcats will race again in two weeks at the Greater Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky. For all Kentucky cross country news and information, go to UKathletics.com.
