Final Round Individual Results
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team started the 2011-12 season on a high note, finishing its first tournament of the season, the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial, on Tuesday afternoon in third place with a combined score of 302 in the final round. UK was able to move up one spot in the rankings on the final day with senior Ashlee Rose and junior Ashleigh Albrecht leading the way by both finishing in the top 10, individually.
Rose continued her consistent play with a 4-over-par 76 in the final round to place 10th overall with a total score of 8-over-par 224. The native of Lexington, Ky., posted two birdies in the final round, increasing her birdie total to seven throughout the 54-hole tournament.
Albrecht bounced back from a rough second round with four birdies to shoot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round. With two rounds under par, Albrecht finished the tournament with a 7-over-par 223 that placed her ninth overall.
Kentucky’s third-place finish with a 50-over-par 914 left them 27 strokes behind Southeastern Conference foe Auburn, which finished in second-place. Texas held strong and kept the lead throughout the final round taking home the team crown with a total score of 885.
The third-place finish marks the best finish in head coach Golda Johansson Borst’s tenure at Kentucky. UK’s previous best finish under Borst was fourth last year in the UCF Challenge. The second-year head coach was very happy with her team’s performance to begin the season.
“What a great way to start the season. The team fought their way through this round today. I could not be prouder of them,” said Borst. “This is a great stepping stone for the rest of the season.”
Junior Heather Lott made significant strides on the third day, shooting a 5-over-par 77, including two birdies. Fellow junior Megan Moir finished the third round with a 6-over-par 78, while Betsie Johnson shot an 11-over-par 83 to wrap up the tournament.
Moir and Johnson finished the tournament tied for 37th and 41st, respectively.
Kentucky hopes to keep the good start rolling when it returns home to host the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Sept. 30th at the University Club in Lexington, Ky.
