No. 15 Soccer Faces No. 13 Cal Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO — Winners of four of its first six games in 2011, the Kentucky men’s soccer team will wrap up its two-game swing in the Golden State on Sunday, traveling to face No. 13 California, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. ET.
Kentucky (4-1-1) is coming off a 3-1 result at Stanford in the Cardinal home opener on Friday night, getting a first-half goal from Los Angles native Charles Pettys. The Cardinal netted three unanswered goals to take control of the game and secure the win.
UK has been led offensively by junior Matt Lodge, who owns five goals and two assists, with all of his 12 points coming in the last three games. Sophomore Tyler Riggs owns four goals and four assists, while Pettys had tallied three assists and a goal. Senior C.J. Tappel owns a goal and two assists, while Brad Walker and Steve Cabos have each netted one goal. Dylan Asher, who has sat out the previous three games due to injury, has added two assists, with Jonathan Brown, Josh McCrary, Josh Mulvany and Steven Perinovic each adding an assist.
In goal, UK has been paced by sophomore Tyler Beadle, a 2010 All-Conference USA selection. Beadle has made four starts for UK through six games, missing two games due to minor injury. A native of Douglasville, Ga., Beadle has posted a 1.25 goals-against average with eight saves.
Cal (1-1-2) has been led offensively by Michael Munoz and John Fitzpatrick, who each own a goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Tony Salciccia and sophomore defender Ryan Neil have each added an assist. Robby Gogatz owns a 1.24 goals-against average, totaling 15 saves and two shutouts.
The Wildcats will be seeking their second win over a top-15 opponent early in 2011, also besting No. 9 Michigan 2-1 on opening weekend, riding two second-half goals from Riggs off the bench for the comeback win.
