LEXINGTON, Ky. — The UK women’s soccer team travels to Louisville, Ky., this weekend to compete in the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic. The first of two games for the Wildcats will be against the Central Michigan Chippewas at 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday at the Cardinal Park.
The Wildcats are looking to start the season 4-0-0 for the first time since the 2001 season when UK started off the season with seven-consecutive wins. Kentucky is 3-0-0 for the second-straight season under head coach Jon Lipsitz.
Senior captain Kelsey Hunyadi leads Kentucky offensively with three goals in the first three games of the season. Hunyadi, a Dublin, Ohio native, is the first player in program history to score a goal in the first three games of a season. She ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in goals with three, as well as ranking fourth in points per game with 2.33.
UK’s offense continues to be one of the best in the conference, ranking first in shots per game and third in shots and assists per game in the SEC, while ranking fourth in total points and goals.
This is the first time the Cats have tangled with the Chippewas. UK is 9-0-1 all-time versus the Mid-American Conference, including a 2-1 victory over Ohio University on Friday night.
The Wildcats are currently leading the SEC East Division, and are one of only two teams left without a blemish on their record in the SEC joining Ole Miss.
Arin Gilliland was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, as announced by the league office. Last week, Gilliland netted the game-winning goal against Eastern Kentucky, as well as drawing the penalty kick that tied the game at the time.
Kayla Price looks to improve on her undefeated record between the pipes for the Wildcats. The freshman net-minder has a save percentage of .750, ranking in the top ten of the SEC in that category.
Baylor and Louisville will join Kentucky and Central Michigan comprising the four teams that make up the tournament. The Cats will face Baylor on Sunday to close out the tournament.
