LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky football senior linebacker Danny Trevathan has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, while junior offensive lineman Larry Warford has made the 2011 Outland Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced Friday.
Trevathan continues to be honored on many preseason watch lists, with this being his third of the summer. The native of Leesburg, Fla., is one of 87 players named to the award’s preseason list, which is annually given to the nation’s best defensive player by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Last season, Trevathan had a breakout year for the Wildcats, leading the Southeastern Conference in tackles with 144, averaging 11.1 tackles per game. Trevathan, who earned first-team All-America honors from CollegeFootballNews.com and was a first-team All-SEC choice by multiple selectors, also led UK with 16 tackles for loss and was third in the SEC in that category. The senior had double-digit tackles in 10 games in 2010, including leading UK in tackles in 10 games.
Players may be added or deleted from the watch list during the season. For the 11th straight season, the FWAA will choose a National Defensive Player of the Week. If that player is not on the watch list, he automatically will be added. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 17. The winner is chosen from five finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team.
The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be Dec. 12 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Iin addition to the 2011 winner being announced, the banquet also will celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by Florida East Coast Railway. Florida’s Jack Youngblood, an end from the FWAA’s 1970 All-American team, will be honored. Georgia head coach Mark Richt will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.
The FWAA also announced that Warford is one of 65 players on the watch list for the prestigious 2011 Outland Trophy, which is given to the best interior lineman in college football. Only tackles, guards and centers on both sides of the ball are considered.
Warford was a key part to UK’s success last season, starting every game and receiving second-team All-SEC honors from multiple selectors. The native of Richmond, Ky., led the team in knockdown blocks with 43 and showed an outstanding ability to block down the field. Warford, who was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2009, was a key part of the UK offensive line in 2010 that ranked second in the SEC in fewest sacks allowed.
Warford’s blocking has helped enable the success of quarterback Mike Hartline, who finished his career as the No. 4 passer in school history; tailback Derrick Locke, the No. 6 rusher in school history; and All-America wide receiver/quarterback Randall Cobb, who set the UK career touchdown record.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists to be named on Nov. 21.
The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third-oldest award in major college football. The winner of the 66th Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century, will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 8 on ESPN.
The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 12, 2012, in Omaha, Neb.
