DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Kentucky track and field team concluded the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with the men’s team earning five points from senior Colin Beovers and the women’s squad collecting two points from Jenna Martin, Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The top point scorer for either squad was senior thrower Colin Boevers, who finished fourth overall in the men’s discus throw competition, collecting five points for the men. Boevers, an All-America honoree last outdoor season, finished fourth in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 56.88m /186-07. The senior posted his long mark on the final throw after entering the sixth and final round in seventh position, improving his mark of 55.45/181-11. The native of Salt Lake City, Utah has a career-long throw of 59.74m/196-00, ranking fifth on UK’s all-time discus list. Boevers wraps up an outstanding career, earning two All-America honors and two Southeastern Conference discus titles during his time at Kentucky.
After running the semifinal round on Wednesday and then the opening leg of the women’s 4x400m relay, Martin came out for the third day in a row on Friday for the finals of the 400m dash. The senior started strong out of the blocks and continued to pick up pace heading into the final turn but slowed down the finish. The native of Nova Scotia, Canada finished seventh in the event with a time of 52.97 and scored the women’s only two points of the NCAA outdoor championships. Martin holds the school record in the event with a time of 51.91, set in 2007, her freshman season.
Junior hurdler Keith Hayes finished 12th in the 110m hurdles with a career-best time of 13.65, improving his previous-best time of 13.70. Hayes was just outside of the top-eight qualifying positions, with the final qualifying time coming in at 13.54. The native of Wichita, Kan., ends his junior campaign as an indoor All-America honoree and ranks second on UK’s all-time 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles list.
In the men’s 800m run, senior Sharif Webb finished fifth in heat two with a time of 1:47.59 and finished 10th overall. Webb narrowly missed out on the finals, with the last qualifying time coming in at 1:47.43. The native of Paramus, N.J., departs Kentucky as the school-record holder (1:47.19) in the 800m dash and with All-America honors from the 2010 indoor season.
Junior Precious Nwokey finished 15th overall in the heptathlon competition, posting a final score of 5,235 points. The junior battled several weather delays, which included steady rain throughout the two-day heptathlon competition but battled to seventh with two events to go. A tough javelin competition set the native of Houston back to 13th with the 800m run remaining. Nwokey posted an 18th-place finish in the 800m, which put her back to her final position of 15th. The junior is the current UK record holder in the heptathlon with a lifetime-best score of 5,543, set in Knoxville, Tenn., her sophomore season.
Senior Mary Angell finished 16th in the women’s discus throw with a mark of 50.36m/165-02. Angell ends the season after setting career best marks in both the discus and shot put at the NCAA East Preliminary Round and at the SEC Championships, respectively. The senior will leave the University of Kentucky holding third place in both the shot put and discus throw on the school’s all-time rankings list.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of Martin, Shiara Robinson, Nwokey and Jazmyn Shorter finished sixth in the second heat with a time of 3:37.82. After the first two heats were completed on Thursday, a rain delay postponed the final section of the event to Friday. With the final results concluded the UK relay squad finished 20th in the event. The foursome does hold the school record in the event with a time of 3:34.15, set at the NCAA East Preliminary round in Bloomington, Ind., on May 29.
Senior Keenan Hall concluded action for the Wildcats on the final day of the NCAA outdoor championships in the triple jump. Keenan was unable to secure a mark, fouling on each of his three attempts.
