DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Colin Boevers scored the Kentucky track and field team’s first five points of the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a fourth-place finish in the men’s discus throw at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday. Fellow senior Jenna Martin advanced in the women’s 400m relays, which will take place Friday at 8:55 p.m. ET.
Boevers, an All-America honoree last outdoor season, finished fourth in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 56.88m /186-07 and secured the first five points for the men’s team. The senior posted his long mark on the final throw after entering the final round in seventh position, improving his mark of 55.45/181-11. The native of Salt Lake City, Utah has a career-long throw of 59.74m/196-00, ranking fifth on UK’s all-time discus list. Boevers wraps up an outstanding career, earning two All-America honors and two Southeastern Conference discus titles during his time at Kentucky.
Also in her final season as a Wildcat, senior Jenna Martin advanced in the women’s 400m dash with a season-best time of 52.04. Martin finished third in the final heat of the event and moved on with the sixth-fastest time overall. The senior broke her season-best mark of 52.30, which she set at the NCAA East Preliminary round two weeks prior and has now reduced her season-best mark in three consecutive races. The native of Nova Scotia, Canada will compete in the finals of the 400m dash on Friday at 8:55 p.m. ET.
In the men’s 800m run, senior Sharif Webb finished fifth in heat two with a time of 1:47.59 and finished 10th overall. Webb narrowly missed out on the finals, with the last qualifying time coming in at 1:47.43. The native of Paramus, N.J., departs Kentucky as the school-record holder (1:47.19) in the 800m dash and with All-America honors from the 2010 indoor season.
Senior Mary Angell finished 16th in the women’s discus throw with a mark of 50.36m/165-02. Angell ends the season after setting career best marks in both the discus and shot put at the NCAA East Preliminary Round and at the SEC Championships, respectively. The senior will leave the University of Kentucky holding third place in both the shot put and discus throw on the school’s all-time rankings list.
Both Angell and Webb receive second-team All-America honors for finishing eighth to 16th place.
Kentucky will have athletes competing in three events on Thursday, beginning with Precious Nwokey in the first event of the heptathlon at 2:00 p.m. ET followed by Keith Hayes in 110m hurdles at 8:10 p.m. ET and the women’s 4x400m relay team at 9:20 p.m. ET.
