DES MOINES, Iowa – Severe weather turned out to be the focus on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with storms on and off throughout the day, causing delays for Kentucky junior Precious Nwokey in the heptathlon, Friday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Nwokey currently sits seventh in the heptathlon competition after four events.
Through four events of the heptathlon competition, junior Precious Nwokey sits seventh with a score of 3,329. Nwokey began the day tying for sixth-place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.86 and gained 998 points, her best event of the day. The junior slowed with a 13th and 14th place finish in the high jump and shot put respectively, but came right back in the 200m dash. The native of Houston, posted a time of 24.86 in the 200m dash for an even 900 points, moving her up to her current position of seventh place. Nwokey will start back tomorrow, if the weather allows, at 5:00 p.m. ET with the long jump followed by the javelin and 800m run.
Junior hurdler Keith Hayes finished 12th in the 110m hurdles with a career-best time of 13.65, improving his previous-best time of 13.70. Hayes was just outside of the top-eight qualifying positions, with the final qualifying time coming in at 13.54. The leader heading into the finals of the 110m hurdles is Omo Osaghae from Texas Tech with a time of 13.32.The native of Wichita, Kan., ends his junior campaign as an indoor All-America honoree and ranks second on UK’s all-time 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles list.
The women’s 4x400m relay of Jenna Martin, Shiara Robinson, Nwokey and Jazmyn Shorter were able to finish their heat right before the weather hit and finished sixth. The final results will be posted after the weather passes and Thursday’s portion of the competition are concluded.
