LEXINGTON, Ky. — After charting nine RBI and a .684 average during Kentucky’s four-game week, UK third baseman Thomas McCarthy has been honored as part of the National All-Star Lineup, it was announced by Diamond Sports and the College Baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday afternoon.
A native of Corvallis, Ore., McCarthy carried UK to a series win over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference home finale and a midweek win over Indiana. McCarthy hit .684 (13-for-19) with nine RBI during the week, batting .714 (10-for-14) with two doubles, two homers and eight RBI during the series with UGA.
McCarthy extended his hitting streak to a team-high seven games and owns a five consecutive three-or-more-hit games. McCarthy’s biggest game of the week came in UK’s series-clinching win on Saturday, collecting a career-high four hits, adding four RBI and belting two homers.
On the year, McCarthy leads UK with a .359 average, totaling a conference-leading 19 doubles, one triple, seven homers and 34 RBI, swiping eight bases. In SEC play alone, McCarthy has hit a club-best .392 with eight doubles, one triple, five homers and 19 RBI. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder leads UK with 27 two-out hits and has added 17 two-out RBI, hitting .403 with two outs. In addition, McCarthy has charted a team-pacing 17 two-strike hits in 2011.
McCarthy was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday morning. UK junior right-hander Alex Meyer collected four national awards last week, including joining the All-Star Lineup, winning SEC Pitcher of the Week and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Kentucky (24-28, 7-20 SEC) wraps up the regular season with the final three-game series of the 2011 series at No. 4 Florida, starting at 7 p.m. ET at McKethan Stadium on Thursday. The games will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio), with the Voice of UK Baseball, Neil Price, calling the action.
