LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky senior women’s tennis player Lauren Meier was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service team on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. This marks the first such honor for Meier.

The SEC sponsors community service teams in all 20 sports.  The community service team looks to highlight athletes from the SEC who give back to their community in superior service efforts. The Woodstock, Ga., native’s community service efforts include the 2010 SEC Together We Can Food Drive, the Big Blue Madness fundraiser, YMCA fall festival, Salvation Army bell ringing, God’s Pantry back pack program and Race for the Cure.

Despite battling injuries throughout her career, Meier was a part of many key wins for the tennis program.   She won seven consecutive matches in the fall of her sophomore season and was a tournament champion at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. During Meier’s sophomore season she earned a victory against Florida and helped lead the Cats to a 4-3 win over the Gators for just the second time in program history.

The Kentucky women’s tennis team will take the courts again on Thursday in Knoxville, Tenn., for the SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament. The No. 10 seeded Cats will face off against No. 7 seed LSU at 6 p.m. ET in the opening round of the tournament. The winner of the UK-LSU match will then face second seeded Tennessee on Friday. LSU defeated UK 5-2 on April 10 during the regular season.
