Round Two Individual Leaderboard
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team, led by sophomore Betsie Johnson, improved by 11 strokes Saturday in the 2011 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships in Auburn, Ala., and finds itself in 10th place heading into Sunday’s final round.
Johnson, a sophomore from Nicholasville, Ky., fired a 1-over par 73 on Saturday to move into a tie for 23rd place overall amongst the conference’s elite golfers. As a team, the Wildcats improved by 11 strokes from Friday’s round, firing a 16-over par 304 to take over 10th place overall.
“The team improved by ten shots today and I am proud of them for that,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We made some birdies early on and got off to a solid start. The wind started to really blow towards the end of the round and unfortunately we weren’t able to finish some of our rounds.”
Johnson again led the Cats in total number of birdies with four on her round, including three in her first five holes. Johnson made the turn with a 2-under par 34, but came in with a double bogey on hole No. 3 to finish with a 1-over par 73. In the championship’s opening two days Johnson is 3-under par on the par 5s.
One of the best rounds of the day for the Cats came from freshman Liz Breed. One day after having to withdraw from the first round of the tournament due to an injury to her right wrist, Breed fought hard and recorded the second best round of the day for UK.
Beginning her round on the par 4 10th hole, Breed got off to a hot start with a birdie to move to 1-under par. The Waynesboro, Pa., native then finished her round in much the same way by grabbing a birdie on the par 4 ninth to finish with a 3-over par 75.
“I am very proud of Liz for playing today after her injury yesterday,” Borst said. “She really dug deep inside herself and worked hard for her 3-over round today.”
Sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht, who was tied with Johnson after day one at the top of the team leaderboard, recorded an 8-over par 80 on Saturday. Fellow sophomore Heather Lott finished with a 5-over par 77 and sits with Albrecht at 13-over par for the championship. Junior Ashlee Rose improved two strokes upon her first round score with a 7-over par 79 and is 16-over for the championship.
As they have done in each of their opening two rounds, the Cats will begin play Sunday on the 10th tee box. Breed will tee off first at 9:00 a.m. ET, with Rose, Lott, Albrecht and Johnson following, respectively, in 10 minute intervals.
