Lexington, Ky. – Kentucky track and field junior Precious Nwokey, rounded out her first heptathlon competition in 2011 as second-place finisher overall with 5,309 points, Thursday at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
Nwokey came into the final three events of the heptathlon in first place but had a tough time in the long jump, finishing in sixth place with a long jump of 5.48m/17-11.75. The junior picked up 694 points for her jump and moved on to the javelin throw.
Nwokey improved on each of her three throws in the javelin on her way to a fifth-place finish with a career-long throw of 27.52m/90-03. The native of Houston finished out the competition strong with a second-place showing in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.86 to add 895 points.
Freshman teammate Kayla Parker completed her first heptathlon of her career with a sixth-place finish totaling 4,544 points. The native of Parker’s first event, the long jump, was her best of the day, finishing fourth with a career-long jump of 5.59m/18-04.75. The freshman finished sixth in both the javelin throw and 800m run to close things out.
Senior Heather Smith was also in action on Thursday, claiming a seventh-place finish in the women’s hammer throw. Smith completed a long throw of 51.39m/168-07 on her first attempt in the finals.
The Kentucky track and field team will be back in action tomorrow at the Sea Ray Relays, beginning at 12:15 p.m. with the men’s discus throw open.
