LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky freshman diver Greg Ferrucci closed out his first day of competition at the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, but made an error on his third dive and suffered an injury en route to a 33rd-place finish at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
“Today was the one-meter contest and Greg started out great,” UK diving coach Ted Hautau said. “He was very relaxed and solid through his first three dives, staying up in the top 10, but he drifted to the left on the takeoff on his third dive. He thought he could adjust the landing and still manage the dive but his left foot slipped completely off the board. His right leg bore all his weight and he managed to get away from the board, but failed the dive and strained his quad. He showed a lot of toughness and did a great job to finish the contest. We’ll see how his leg is tomorrow and make a decision on whether he competes in the three-meter.”
Ferrucci did not qualify for the finals, earning a score of 264.65 in the preliminaries to earn a 33rd-place finish.
Ferrucci, the Southeastern Conference Freshman Diver of the Year, ranks third all-time in UK history on the one-meter board, and second on both the three-meter board and the platform.
The Huntersville, N.C., native will represent the Wildcats on the three-meter board on Friday if he is able to compete. The platform diving competition will take place on Saturday, the third and final day of the championships.
