LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 14th-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennis team wrapped up a seven-match home stand with two dominating victories over No. 43 Maryland and Eastern Kentucky at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
Kentucky (18-5) started the day with an impressive 5-2 win over Maryland for its 11th win this season over a top-50 ranked team. The two non-conference wins improves Kentucky’s record this season in non-conference home matches to 12-0 and 25-0 since last year. The Wildcats are now 13-2 at home this year and 41-8 at home since the start of the 2009.
The Wildcats started the match against UM by winning the doubles point, improving its record this season to 10-2 when it wins at least two doubles matches. Junior Eric Quigley and senior Brad Cox, ranked 48th in the nation in doubles, started the scoring by claiming at 8-3 victory over Maros Horny and Andy Magee at No. 1 doubles. After Maryland won at No. 2 doubles, Kentucky’s No. 3 doubles tandem of junior Alex Musialek and sophomore Anthony Rossi earned the doubles point for UK with an 8-2 victory over Jesse Kiuru and Jan Surovic.
In singles, Kentucky got a total of four singles wins, including Quigley’s victory over No. 75 Horny 6-2, 6-1. After No. 117 Alberto Gonzalez took down Magee 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, No. 47 Musialek secured the decisive fourth point for UK at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sergio Wyss. The Wildcats’ fifth point in the match came at No. 6 singles when freshman Grant Roberts earned a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Kiuru.
In the second match of the day against Eastern Kentucky, UK won all six singles matches en route to a convincing 6-0 victory. The match started with Quigley making light work of Alex Das with a 6-0, 6-3 win, while freshman Tom Jomby finished soon after by defeating Emilio Piriz 6-1, 6-3. Gonzalez gave UK a 3-0 lead when he took down Philip Janz 6-0, 6-4, while Cox clinched the match by posting a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Niklas Schroeder. Rossi and Roberts wrapped up the UK scoring with Rossi defeating Parul Verma 6-4, 6-4 and Roberts taking down Hugo Klientovsky 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Kentucky will be in action again Saturday, when it travels to No. 26 Auburn for a 2 p.m. ET match against the Tigers.
