LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior diver Lisa Faulkner led the Kentucky women’s swimming and diving team Thursday at day one of the 2011 women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
Faulkner, who qualified for the NCAA championships just last week based on her performance at the Zone C Diving Championships, finished the preliminaries in 12th with a score of 287.00 to earn a spot in the consolation finals. In the finals, Faulkner recorded a 278.55 to finish in 16th place.
“Lisa competed very well in the preliminaries,” UK diving coach Ted Hautau said. “She stayed relaxed and was very consistent. Our goal this year is to be in a position to score and dive like she belongs here. That was a big step for her to make the top 16. She missed her first dive in the final, but fought her nerves and recovered well. It was a great first day for her.”
The women’s 400-medley relay team of seniors Chatham Penrod and Lindsey Graessle, junior Mandy Myers and senior Kayla Sergesketter finished just outside of the top 16 with a score 3.39.11.
UK’s 200-freestyle relay team, similar to its 400-medley team, just missed out on the consolation finals with a 1:32.58 to finish in 21st.
Sergesketter finished the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.86.
Friday’s events will include the 200-medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, three-meter diving and 800-freestyle relay.
