LEXINGTON, Ky. – The date is finally here for senior swimmers Kayla Sergesketter, Chatham Penrod, and Lindsey Graessle, junior swimmer Mandy Myers, and senior diver Lisa Faulkner. For these five, the 2011 women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships represent both a season, and a career of hard work. On Thursday, that hard work culminates with the championships beginning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
Penrod, Graessle, Sergesketter and Myers earned an NCAA A-cut time in an exhibition swim of the 200-medley relay on day two of the Southeastern Conference Swimming Championships in Gainesville, Fla. The quartet clocked in with a time of 1:37.68, a program best mark.
Faulkner, a senior from Midlothian, Va., holds the third best one-meter, three-meter and platform diving scores in the program’s history. Last weekend, on day two of the Zone C Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Faulkner recorded a 296.35 in the preliminaries to enter the finals in fifth place. Faulkner fought hard in the finals and nailed her final dives to remain in fifth place and earn a spot in the championships with a final score of 581.15.
Penrod has led the Wildcats in the 100 and 200 backstroke this year, and holds the top time in each of the two events in Kentucky history.
Graessle is UK’s top 100 and 200 breaststroke swimmer and ranks second all-time in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 breaststroke in program history.
Sergesketter has led Kentucky in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle this year. The Jasper, Ind., native ranks first all-time at UK in the 200 freestyle, second in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle.
Myers, an Apex, N.C., native, leads Kentucky in the 100 butterfly with a top time of 54.33. Myers’ 100 fly time ranks sixth in program history.
“The ladies are excited and ready to compete,” UK head coach Gary Conelly said. “It is going to be a fast meet and we’re expecting some great performances. We could certainly see several team records fall, as well as winning some All American honors.”
Thursday’s action will include the 200-freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, one-meter diving board and 400-medley relay.
Preliminary swimming events will begin each day at 11 a.m. ET, followed by the finals at 7 p.m. Diving preliminary events will begin each day at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by the consolation finals. Diving finals, like swimming finals, will begin each day at 7 p.m.
