LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team completed first round play at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic on Friday with a score of 12-over par, 313, to finish round one in 15th place at one of the most competitive tournaments of the spring season.

The newly renovated University Club (Par 72, 6,186 yards) at the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La., gave every team in the 21-team field a challenge. Wake Forest leads the tournament at the end of round one, sitting at 6-over par. The average score among all teams for the first round was 78.85.

Sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht led the Wildcats with a 5-over par, 77. Freshman Liz Breed carded a 6-over par 78 and sophomore Heather Lott and junior Ashlee Rose each finished with 7-over par, 79s.

“Today was a tough day for the Wildcats,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We got off to a solid start, but struggled toward the middle and end of our rounds. Everyone had a big number today, which really hurt us. We are regrouping this afternoon and we will take the positives with us for the next two days.”

Sophomore Betsie Johnson, who led the Wildcats in the fall with the lowest scoring average, played her first tournament of the spring after recovering from a shoulder injury. Johnson closed out her first round with an 8-over par, 80.

Senior Louise Ljungstedt competed as an individual for Kentucky and finished with a 9-over par, 81.

Ryan Harrington of Golf Digest ranked the three-day tournament as the best women’s collegiate tournament of the spring season. Four of the top 10 and nine of the top 20 teams in the latest Golf World/NGCA Division I women’s coaches’ poll are featured in the tournament.

Saturday’s second round will begin at 8:51 a.m. ET. The Wildcats will begin their second round off the 10th tee.
