LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team is heading south to the state of Louisiana once again. Two weeks after competing in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship in New Orleans, the Cats will begin play in the LSU Tiger Golf Classic beginning Friday at the University Club (Par 72, 6,186 yards) in Baton Rouge, La.
“We are excited about playing in Baton Rouge this weekend,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “The golf course is in great shape. The greens are firm and undulating; they will provide a challenge for each team out here. We need to be patient and take advantage of our opportunities when they arise.”
Kentucky will be sending sophomores Ashleigh Albrecht, Heather Lott and Betsie Johnson, junior Ashlee Rose and freshman Liz Breed. Senior Louise Ljungstedt will be competing as an individual for the Wildcats.
Albrecht has led Kentucky this spring season, earning two top-20 finishes in Kentucky’s two tournaments, including co-champion honors at the UCF Challenge in mid-February and SEC co-Golfer of the Week honors. Albrecht’s scoring average this spring through two tournaments is at an impressive 71.17.
The LSU Tiger Golf Classic will be the first tournament of the spring for Johnson. Johnson led the Wildcats during the fall with a stroke average of 74.50. The Nicholassville, Ky., native is recovering from a shoulder injury.
Ryan Harrington of Golf Digest ranked the three-day tournament as the best women’s collegiate tournament of the spring season. Four of the top 10 and nine of the top 20 teams in the latest Golf World/NGCA Division I women’s coaches’ poll are featured in the tournament.
The Cats will be competing against 20 other schools this week, including Tulane, Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina, North Carolina State, TCU, UNC-Wilmington, Texas A&M, Louisville, Furman, Charleston and Louisiana Monroe. From the Southeastern Conference Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and host LSU will also be competing.
The University Club has been completely renovated with new greens, trees and course design and will provide a tough challenge for Kentucky and all other schools.
