Apologies for the lack of content over the last 24 hours. It’s been a slow, slow news day around these parts, which gave me time to work on a couple of stories for next week.
– The Kentucky women’s basketball team will face LSU on Friday in the second round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament at 3:30 p.m. ET. Seventh-seeded LSU stifled 10th-seeded Alabama in Thursday’s first-round game, 60-36. LSU held the Crimson Tide to 24.1 percent shooting. LSU will pose some problems for the Cats. In their first meeting this year, a 49-47 victory for the Cats, UK shot 32.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times. Kentucky survived the upset scare on Brittany Henderson’s game-winning layup with 1.1 seconds left.
– Kevin Grevey will represent UK as one of 12 SEC greats in the 2011 class of SEC Basketball Legends that will be honored at the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament next week. The 2011 class includes Robert Horry, Alabama; George Kok, Arkansas; Jimmy Fibbe, Auburn; Craig Brown, Florida; Walter Daniels, Georgia; Kevin Grevey, Kentucky; Howard Carter, LSU; Bob Weltlich, Ole Miss; Darryl Wilson, Mississippi State; BJ McKie, South Carolina; Jimmy England, Tennessee; and Jeff Turner, Vanderbilt. Grevey is a two-time All-America selection (1974 and 1975). He earned consensus All-America honors in 1975 and is a two-time SEC Player of the Year (1973 and 1975). Ranked seventh on UK’s all-time scoring lists with 1,801 career points, Grevey led UK to a share of the SEC championship and a national runner-up finish in 1975. He was named to the 1975 NCAA All-Final Four team and went on to become the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 1975 NBA Draft. His jersey is among those retired in UK’s Rupp Arena.
– Former UK men’s basketball star Patrick Patterson will throw out the first pitch before the UK-Rice baseball game in the Houston College Classic on Friday at Houston’s Minute Maid Park. Brent Ingram has the full details on this weekend’s tournament.
