OXFORD, Miss. — Paced by Heather Greathouse’s team-high score, the Kentucky rifle team sits in second place after the smallbore competition on day one of the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, held Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar Army National Guard Readiness Center.

The Wildcats posted a 2322 total team score in smallbore, with top-ranked West Virginia riding a 591 from star Nicco Campriani to a first-place 2337 score. Army is in third place after the smallbore round with a 2311 total score, while Ole Miss (2299) and Memphis (2296) round out the top five. With an unbeaten regular-season slate, the Wildcats won the GARC regular-season championship.

“Overall, I’m not disappointed in the effort,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “If we keep giving the effort then we will reach our goals. We are in second place and only a few points out so it is going to come down to tomorrow. WVU had a solid score, one of the best smallbore scores that I’ve ever seen in the country. There have been a few scores that high, but they really shot well. Everyone is working hard. If we keep doing what we are doing then I think we will see the result we like at the end. We have to be patient and take it step-by-step.”

Greathouse led UK with a 582, highlighted by a 198 in kneeling smallbore. Freshman Emily Holsopple totaled a 581, while Ethan Settlemires had a 580. Henri Junghänel finished with a 579, with senior Logan Fox totaling a 575.

The competition will resume on Sunday, with the team shooting the air rifle portion of the match. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET and will last throughout the day.
