LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team is headed down to the Bayou to compete in one of the most highly regarded fields of the spring season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship in New Orleans beginning Sunday.
The 17-team field competing at the English Turn Golf & Country Club (Par 72, 6,105 yards) will be one of the most competitive fields in collegiate golf. All 17 teams are ranked in the top 50 in the country, including seven of the top 10 teams and 12 of the top 25 teams. Ryan Harrington of Golf Digest ranked the three-day tournament as the second-best women’s collegiate tournament for the spring season.
The Wildcats will be going up against Alabama, Southern California, LSU, Duke, Purdue, Virginia, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Denver, Texas A&M, Arizona State and host school Tulane.
“We are very excited about playing in New Orleans this weekend,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “This tournament has a very deep field and is the kind of competition that I want my team to play against. English Turn Golf Club is tough and the same kind of course as our last tournament where we had to play smart and stick to our game plan to be successful. I believe in my team and know that we will do well this week.”
Competing for Kentucky are sophomores Ashleigh Albrecht, Megan Moir and Heather Lott, junior Ashlee Rose, and freshman Liz Breed. Moir will tee off first for the Cats at 8:45 a.m. ET, followed by Rose, Lott, Breed and then Albrecht. Each of the Cats will begin their first rounds on the 10th hole.
The Cats enter this week’s tournament coming off a fourth place finish at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. Albrecht led the Cats en route to earning co-champion honors. The Murrieta, Calif., native’s first round 6-under par, 66 was the second lowest individual score in Kentucky women’s golf history since records began being kept in the 1987-88 season. The Cats’ first round score of 1-under par, 287 was the second lowest team score in program history. Kentucky’s final score of 17-over par, 881 is its lowest of the 2010-11 season. Albrecht’s play earned her Southeastern Conference co-Golfer of the Week honors, as announced by the league office Thursday.
