LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky junior No. 70 Alex Musialek posted a dominating straight-sets performance over No. 55 Jean Andersen of Texas, but the 12th-seeded Wildcats fell just short of an upset bid of fifth-seeded Texas 4-2 in the opening round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations’ National Men’s Team Indoor Championship on Friday.

Musialek’s win in singles was his biggest of the season for the junior as he is now 3-2 against ranked foes. The native of Dax, France is now 6-4 this season in dual-match play and 13-9 overall. Freshman Tom Jomby also grabbed a singles win for UK, defeating Daniel Whitehead 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Senior Alberto Gonzalez was leading in his singles match at No. 4 singles 7-5, 4-6, 4-1 before the match was abandoned.

UK junior Eric Quigley dropped his singles match over No. 91 Ed Corrie in a close 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 decision, while senior Brad Cox and sophomore Anthony Rossi also dropped singles matches.

Kentucky lost the doubles point after dropping matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Quigley and Cox fell at No. 1 doubles to the second-ranked doubles tandem in the nation in Corrie Anderson 8-4. Texas then clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles when Kellen Domico and David Holiner took down Jomby and Gonzalez 8-6. Kentucky’s tandem of Musialek and Rossi led Mladenov and Chen 7-4.

UK will now face 13th-seeded Texas Tech in consolation bracket Saturday. Texas Tech lost to fourth-seeded Ohio State 4-1 Friday in the opening round.

The 2011 ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship, the signature indoor team tournament of the college tennis season, features 16 of the top men’s programs in the nation.
