Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and then continued its momentum into singles by claiming all six singles matches to take down No. 38 Miami (Fla.) 7-0 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Sunday. Kentucky also defeated Cleveland State on Sunday night 6-1 to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Kentucky (8-2) was impressive in both matches, winning 11 of the 12 singles matches and all five doubles matches that were played Sunday. The Miami (3-3) match marked the sixth time this year that UK has faced a top-50 team, with UK holding a 4-2 mark in those matches.

“That was a great win for us against Miami because they are a very good team, that has already beaten a top-30 team this year in Arizona,” UK head coach Dennis Emery said. “This will be a good win for us at the end of the year, for sure. I thought that we played a very complete match and doubles was probably the best today that it has been all year for us. Hopefully, we can use this win as some momentum as we go into the National Indoors this weekend.”

The Wildcats started the match against Miami by sweeping the action in doubles, getting wins at all three courts. Junior Eric Quigley and senior Brad Cox started the winning for UK, taking down Keith Crowley and Christian Blocker 8-4, before UK clinched the doubles point by getting a victory from junior Alex Musialek and sophomore Anthony Rossi over Pedro Ast and Waylon Chin 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Alberto Gonzalez and Tom Jomby then finished off the sweep by taking down Omar Aly and Carl Sundberg 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. UK is now 3-0 this season when it wins the doubles point.

Kentucky continued to perform well in singles, getting straight-set wins at all six positions. The singles scoring began when No. 2 Quigley made light work of Chin 6-3, 6-2. Cox then gave UK a 3-0 lead when he used a gutsy effort to defeat Keith Crowley 7-6 (5), 6-4. Kentucky would clinch the match when No. 72 Gonzalez posted a come-from-behind win in the second set over Carl Sundberg to win his match 6-3, 7-5 and give UK the decisive fourth point.

Three matches were still in play when Gonzalez clinched the match for UK, including play at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 singles. Kentucky would claim all three matches with Musialek defeating Blocker 7-6 (3), 6-4 at No. 2 singles before Rossi defeated Eduardo Pavia 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. UK freshman Grant Roberts wrapped up the scoring by claiming a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gabriel Flores at No. 6 singles.

UK was also dominate against Cleveland State, winning five singles matches and both doubles matches that were played. In singles, Quigley, Musialek, Cox, Roberts and freshman Maks Gold posted victories, while in doubles UK got wins from junior Matt Davis and freshman Ryuji Hirooka, and Roberts and freshman Alejandro Gomez.

The Wildcats will be in action again Friday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be played in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 18-21. Complete draws are expected to be released Monday.
