LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team got a victory in doubles competition from freshmen Khristina Blajkevitch and CeCe Witten, but fell to Marshall (2-0) on the road 5-2 in Huntington, W. Va., on Sunday afternoon.
The Cats (0-2) got off to a great start with a commanding 8-2 win from the freshman duo to begin the dual match against Marshall. The Thundering Herd, ranked No. 53 in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won the next two doubles matches however, and took the doubles point to go up 1-0.
Kentucky dropped the first singles match against Marshall, but sophomore Jessica Stiles, who transferred to Kentucky from Duke, earned the first victory of her UK career by topping Dominika Zaprazna 6-4, 6-3. Stiles’ victory came at the No. 2 position for the Cats.
Also earning a victory for the Cats was freshman Caitlin McGraw. McGraw, who hails from Orlando, Fla., got the victory for Kentucky from the No. 4 singles position with a hard-fought, straight sets victory over Marshall’s Kristina Koprcina 7-6, 7-5. McGraw is now 2-0 on the spring season after earning a victory from the No. 6 position Saturday against Minnesota.
The Kentucky women’s tennis team will hit the courts again Feb. 5 in Ann Arbor, Mich., against the Michigan Wolverines. The Cats will then have their first home match of the spring season Feb. 9 against Ohio State.
