LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to the University of Louisville Saturday afternoon at the Lancaster Aquatic Center with the women’s team falling 186-114 and the men’s team falling 184-115 on Senior Day.
Kentucky opened the meet with a pair of wins in the 200 medley relays. The women’s team of Chatham Penrod, Lindsey Graessle, Mandy Myers and Jenna Newsome came in first with a time of 1:42.76. The men’s team of Ramon Walton, Matt Russell, Jonathan Keltner and Chip Aplin tied a season-best time in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:29.99.
In the meet’s last event, the 400-freestyle relay, the women’s team of Kayla Sergesketter, Newsome, Kristen Wilson and Myers captured first place with a time of 3:25.03. The men’s 400-free relay quartet of Stephen Wimmer, Aplin, David Sanders, and Reinhardt Strijdom earned first-place marks with a time of 3:01.65.
Travis Green destroyed his previous season-best time in the 1,000 freestyle by nearly 13 seconds. The sophomore from Charleston, W. Va., swam a 9:19.47 to take the event. His previous season-best time in the 1,000 free was 9:32.35. Green also came in second place in the 500 free.
The men’s team took four of the top-five spots in the 50-freestyle, including first and second place by Aplin and Sanders. Aplin won the race and Sanders came in second place with a season-best time of 20.71.
Freshman diver Greg Ferrucci continued his impressive season with convincing victories on the one- and three-meter boards.
“Today was a good day for our divers,” UK diving coach Ted Hautau said. “In preparation for the end of the season their workload is very heavy right now, so they competed pretty sharp on tired legs.
“Greg tried out two new, higher degree of difficulty dives on the three-meter,” Hautau said. “It was impressive that he went close to his season best up there.”
Freshman Zack Peterson also had a strong day for the men’s team on the diving board. Peterson followed Ferrucci on the three-meter board with a second-place score of 293.55.
“Coming from gymnastics, Zack Peterson is still learning how to dive, but he is showing that he knows how to compete,” Hautau said. “I was pleased with his second place finish today on the three-meter.”
Sergesketter swam well in her final meet in the Lancaster Aquatic Center as a Wildcat. The senior from Jasper, Ind., won the 100 and 200 freestyle races, and came in second in the 50 free.
Senior diver Lisa Faulkner had a season-best score on the one-meter board and came in second place. In a close battle on the three-meter board, Faulkner squeezed out a win with a score of 306.15.
“Lisa went with her best score of the season on the one-meter and is getting her groove going on the three-meter,” Hautau said. “That was a good win today on the three-meter.”
The Cats will hit the pool again Saturday in a double dual meet in Cincinnati, Ohio, against host school Cincinnati and Virginia Tech.
