WEST POINT, N.Y. — Sophomore Stacy Wheatley totaled a career-high in air rifle and newcomers Emily Holsopple and Henri Junghänel paced UK in both guns, as the Kentucky rifle team shot at Army’s Tronsure Marksmanship Center on Sunday.
Kentucky (6-1) traveled to West Point to face Columbus State on Sunday, with CSU facing host Army on Saturday. After Army posted a win over Columbus State on Saturday, the southeastern portion of the nation was set to be blanketed with a winter storm. With CSU’s flight cancelled on Sunday and facing the threat of missing several days of classes due to the weather, CSU was able to get a flight on early on Sunday morning. With CSU flying home, UK shot on Sunday at the Tronsure Marksmanship Center.
“It was a somewhat unique situation, but we are glad that CSU was able to get home safely and I was really pleased with our scores,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We are not sure how the match will be scored and will have to work with CSU and the NCAA, but I was happy with the effort of the team. Our team score, if it is treated as a match, is one of our highest match scores of the year. It was nice to see solid scores in both guns to start the spring semester, it gives us a great place to start the spring campaign.”
Wheatley totaled a 590 in air rifle, setting a new career best. Holsopple totaled a 582 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle, while Junghänel finished with a 584 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle. Ethan Settlemires finished with a 582 in smallbore and a 588 in air rifle. Sophomore Katie Fretts, the reigning Great American Rifle Conference Rookie of the Year, finished with a solid 587 in air rifle, also totaling a 575 in smallbore. Senior Logan Fox totaled a 582 in smallbore and Heather Greathouse added a 583 in smallbore.
“Stacy had a great day and Emily and Henri were solid as always,” Mullins said. “It was really good to see Katie, Heather and Logan get good scores, they have really been working hard in training and their scores are starting to show that effort.”
UK will return to action on Jan. 19, hosting powerhouse Alaska-Fairbanks at UK’s Barker Hall.
