IRVING, Texas — After netting the game-winning goal in the 87th minute against South Carolina on Sunday, Kentucky men’s soccer freshman Brendan Murphy has been named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.

Murphy, a native of Tamworth, England, had a breakout game vs. the Gamecocks, leading UK to the win in the regular-season finale. The win sets up UK’s first-round matchup with No. 19 and sixth-seeded Tulsa on Wednesday night in the Conference USA Tournament. UK will face the Golden Hurricane at 8:30 p.m. ET in Memphis, Tenn.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pounder, picked a splendid time for his first career goal, as he took the ball in the 87th minute and worked from the far end of the pitch through the South Carolina defense inside the box, side-stepping a sliding tackle and leaping a South Carolina defender. Murphy then took an off-balance shot from the near side of the 18-yard box, sailing into the net at the near post.

On the year, Murphy has played in 14 games with four starts, totaling one goal and one assist. Murphy has taken three shots and has been a weapon on corner kicks. Murphy, who graced the starting lineup for the South Carolina game for first time since Sept. 17 vs. No. 6 Connecticut, totaled two shots in the game with the Gamecocks.
