LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team turned in their third-lowest score of the fall season Friday in the first round of the Southeastern Conference/Pacific-10 Women’s Golf Challenge at the Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6,103 yards).

Competing against some of the best women’s golf programs in the country, including 17 teams ranked inside the latest Golfweek/Sagarin top 50 rankings, and each of the top-four teams, the Cats finished the first round in 13th place out of 21 teams with an 11-over-par 295.

“I am very proud of my team for how they played today,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “As a group, they played with confidence and committed to the game plan we had set up for the course. Today, each of the girls was faced with adversity at different parts of their rounds. They all individually dug deep and finished strong.”

Sophomore Betsie Johnson led the Cats in the first round with a 1-over-par 72. Johnson shot a 3-over-par 39 on her opening nine, but bounced back with two birdies on the back to shoot a 2-under-par 33. She currently sits in a tie for 22nd-place out of 108 golfers.

Louise Ljungstedt, the only senior for the Cats, played consistent golf throughout her opening round 2-over-par 73. Ljungstedt shot 1-over-par on the front and back nines in route to turning in her lowest round of the fall season.

Sophomores Ashleigh Albrecht and Heather Lott shot a 3-over-par 74 and 5-over-par 76, respectively. Albrecht had three birdies on her round, including two on her back nine where she shot a 1-under-par 34.

Junior Laura McGehee shot a 9-over-par 80.

Friday’s round was the first round the Cats had played since Oct. 10 when they finished play at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

The three-day tournament will continue tomorrow with the Cats teeing off at 7:30 a.m. PT. UK will tee off from the 10th hole. McGehee will tee off first for the Cats, followed by Lott, Albrecht, Ljungstedt and Johnson every 10 minutes.

“We will continue to stay in the present and work hard to improve on what we left out on the course today,” Borst said.

The tournament will conclude Sunday with the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT.
