LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team is heading west to compete in the inaugural Southeastern Conference/Pacific-10 Women’s Golf Challenge held at the Stanford Golf Course (par 71, 6,103 yards) in Stanford, Calif.
The Cats will take to the links for the first time since closing out the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., with a top-10 finish and their second-lowest round of the fall season. The SEC/Pac-10 Women’s Golf Challenge will mark Kentucky’s final tournament of the 2010 fall season.
“We are very excited to be traveling west for the inaugural SEC/Pac-10 Women’s Golf Challenge,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “This tournament is special because it will really show how great both these conferences are.”
Borst is sending sophomores Betsie Johnson, Ashleigh Albrecht and Heather Lott, senior Louise Ljungstedt, and junior Laura McGehee to represent the Wildcats.
Johnson has led the Cats this year with a per-round average of 74.33. Johnson also leads Kentucky with the low round of the season when she shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships.
Albrecht, Ljungstedt and Lott have each played alongside Johnson during Kentucky’s previous two tournaments. McGehee, a junior from Lakeside Park, Ky., will be making her season debut this weekend.
“I am confident in this team and I know they will give it their all this week,” Borst said. “This is the toughest field we have played against all fall, but if each individual can play up to her potential then I know we will be successful as a team.”
The three-day, 54-hole stroke-play tournament will pit the Cats against some of the best teams in the SEC and Pac-10. Kentucky will face off against each of the SEC’s other 11-member schools, along with Arizona, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Southern California, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Washington State. Arizona State has already concluded its fall schedule.
“The SEC and the Pac-10 have the best teams in the country for women’s golf,” Borst said. “Now we will get to see which one is better.”
Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. PT on Friday and Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. PT on Sunday.
Co-champions will be named in the event of a tie for the team and/or individual title.
