Cat Scratches Preview: Joker Phillips’ keys to the game
Each and every week prior to a Kentucky football game, Cat Scratches will talk with head coach Joker Phillips about his of plan of attack. Without giving away too much of the game plan, Phillips will tell us his keys to the game, a key matchup and who Kentucky has to look out for on the opposing team.
Offensive key No. 1- Execute: “We’ve told our offensive guys, when you see teams that lose to I-AA teams, the thing that happens is you don’t protect the ball, you play sloppy, you get minus-yard plays, you miss blocks and assignments. Those things you cannot do in a game like this. It’s all about execution. Execute your assignment and make sure you’re not careless with the ball.”
Cat Scratches’ take: It’s fairly simple in a game like this – execute and take care of business. Talent-wise, UK should be able to rebound from its recent skid and get back on track in its quest for a fifth straight bowl bid, but the precedent for Football Championship Subdivision upsets has been set this year with Jacksonville State defeating Ole Miss, North Dakota State upsetting Kansas and South Dakota toppling Minnesota (quite a year for the Dakotas, huh?). The Football Bowl Subdivision opponents (Ole Miss, Kansas and Minnesota) had a minus-five turnover margin in those three games.
UK Plays Host to Charleston Southern in Non-Conference Finale
After six consecutive Southeastern Conference games, Kentucky will take a break from league play when it plays host to Charleston Southern in the final non-conference game of the season.
The Wildcats are looking to snap a two-game losing streak after a heartbreaking 24-17 loss to No. 23 Mississippi State on Saturday in Starkville. Facing a 10-point deficit in the first quarter, the Wildcats rallied to tie the game at 17-17 in the third quarter before the Bulldogs scored early in the fourth quarter and never relinquished their lead. UK was led by junior wide receiver Randall Cobb, who had a career-high 12 receptions for a career-high 171 yards and a touchdown. Freshman tailback Raymond Sanders recorded his first career start for injured starting tailback Derrick Locke and rushed a careerhigh 24 times for 71 yards. Senior quarterback Mike Hartline completed 23-of-41 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Junior linebacker Danny Trevathan had another monster game defensively, charting 16 tackles, including 1.5 tackle for loss.
Charleston Southern is in the midst of a five-game losing streak, including a 41-21 loss at Stony Brook last Saturday. The Buccaneers have been led this season by running back DeMarcus Moon, who has 95 rushes for 323 yards and six touchdowns. The Bucs are throwing for 248.8 yards per gmae.
This marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools in football and only the second team that Kentucky has ever played in the current alignment of the Big South.
