LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s golf junior Mads Kristensen scored a team-low 1-under-par 70 to sit in a tie for eighth after the first day of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at Sapphire Valley Country Club on Monday. As a team, Kentucky sits in fourth place with a 1-over-par 285 in the first round.
Kristensen paced Kentucky with the under-par score, sitting in prime position to make a run for the singles title in the final round Tuesday. The native of Denmark, scored two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars in the first round.
Kristensen was followed by sophomore Joseph Barr, who scored five birdies in the first 18 holes to sit in the top 20 after day one. Barr sat at 4-over-par with 10 holes to play before birdying five of the next seven holes to get back in contention. The native of Versailles, Ky., ended day one with an even-par 71.
Senior Brian Belden and freshman Stephen Powers finished the first round in a tie for 24th, after each player scored a 1-over-par 72. Belden was at 2-over-par at the turn before birdying two of the next three holes to get to 1-over-par, while Powers scored three birdies in the final seven holes to card the quality score.
Sophomore Chase Parker wraps up the UK rotation by posting a 6-over-par 77, sitting in a tie for 73rd. Sophomore Seth Blann, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, scored a 76 in the first round and is tied for 62nd.
Vanderbilt sits in the team lead after a 7-under-par 277 in the first round, followed by Wofford College at 1-under-par 283. Vanderbilt’s Adam Hofmann is first on the individual leaderboard at 5-under-par, followed by Trey DelGreco at 4-under-par.
