LEXINGTON, Ky. — Sophomore Heather Greathouse posted a match-best 590 in air rifle and added a 581 in smallbore, to lead the Kentucky rifle team past Army, on Sunday at UK’s Barker Hall.
Kentucky (1-0, 1-0 Great American Rifle Conference) won its conference opener against high-powered Army, 4672-4610, using a breakout performance from Greathouse and solid outings from Logan Fox, Emily Holsopple and Ethan Settlemires. Greathouse led the way with the match-best 590 in air rifle and her 581 in smallbore was second-best on the team.
“I am very proud of Heather and her performance this weekend,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “She worked through adversity like a champion in order to reach her personal goals. She has set some high standards for herself this year, but has also committed to a high level of intensity during training. This focus has brought her expectations to reality. We are all looking forward to watching Heather the rest of the season.”
Fox finished with a 588 in air rifle and a team-high 583 in smallbore. Holsopple added a 589 in air rifle and a 581 in smallbore, while Settlemires contributed a 574 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle. Sophomore Katie Fretts totaled a 575 in smallbore and a 582 in air rifle. In addition, Stacy Wheatley totaled an impressive 589 in air rifle.
“Really pleased with the performance of the whole team,” Mullins said. “People stepped up Friday and Sunday. It was a good overall performance. We put ourselves in a good position because we worked hard. It proved that we have the skill sets to performance at the level we want, now we are tasked with refining our skill sets further to make the numbers we aspire to. But as a coach, you have to be pleased by how hard they worked today and the effort overall this weekend.”
Kentucky will return to action on Saturday, hosting Ohio State and N.C. State at UK’s Barker Hall.
