LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team traveled south Wednesday to begin play in the qualifying singles and doubles draws for the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships.
The young UK doubles team of Meredith Morrow and Elle Coldiron fell to Amy Nini and Taylor Hines of Wright State 8-5.
Morrow and Coldiron each competed in Wednesday’s qualifying singles draw as well. Morrow dropped a hard fought match to Rieki Honiball of Miami (Ohio) 7-6, 7-6. Coldiron was defeated by Nini of Wright State 6-2, 6-2.
Kentucky freshman Caitlin McGraw learned her opponent Wednesday after the qualifying singles. McGraw will face one of the tournament’s eight players who made it through the qualifying stage and into the main draw. McGraw will go up against Anouk Faure of Eastern Kentucky. Faure won her first match 6-1, 6-4 and her second match 6-4, 6-1 to advance into the main singles draw.
In addition to McGraw, Kentucky will also have freshmen Misha Testerman, Marni Venter and Khristina Blajkevitch, along with sophomore Jessica Stiles and senior Megan Broderick, competing in the main singles draw on Thursday.
Testerman will face Yuri Nomoto of Middle Tennessee State. Venter will face Rachael Dillon of Vanderbilt, and Blajkevitch will go up against Julia Fellerhoff of Louisville. Stiles will face Amelia Harris, also of Louisville, and Broderick will face Alex Leatu of Vanderbilt.
Kentucky will be led in the main doubles draw by the tandem of Broderick and Stiles. The Broderick-Stiles duo has a 2-1 record this fall season. They will face off against Stefanie Villajuan and Harris of Louisville. The Cats will also have a pair of freshmen teams competing in the main doubles draw. Blajkevitch and McGraw will face Rebecca Shine and Miller of Louisville. Meanwhile, Venter and Testerman will compete against Emily Hangstefer and Charlotte Bossy of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Main draw play for singles and doubles will begin Thursday. The round of 32 for doubles will begin at 8 a.m., and the round of 64 singles will begin at 11 a.m.
