LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team finished day two at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships with a 10-stroke improvement from their round one score.
The Cats, led by sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht who shot an even par 72, shot a 297 in the second round.
“Today was a better day for us as a team,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We really had to fight back at the end of the round and I am proud of how the girls persevered today. We know we left some shots out there, but after the round we had a good practice session. I know we are ready for tomorrow.”
Albrecht, along with Ashlee Rose, Heather Lott, Betsie Johnson and Louise Ljungstedt, teed off on the 10th hole. Albrecht got off to a strong start by parring the first seven holes before scoring an eagle on the 462-yard par five 17th hole. The Murrieta, Calif., native then birdied the par four 18th to make the turn with a 3-under par 33. Albrecht’s 72 is a nine-stroke improvement from her first round score.
Rose recorded her lowest round of the 2010 fall season with a two-over par 74. Rose improved five strokes from her first round score.
Lott, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., also improved upon her first round score. Lott went three strokes lower than she did Friday with a three-over par 75 on Saturday. Lott had an up and down round throughout the afternoon, recording five birdies on the day.
Johnson, who led the Cats in round one with a two-under par 70 that put her in a tie for fourth place, shot a four-over par 76 Saturday. She currently sits in a tie for 15th place, just two strokes out of the top 10. Johnson finished in fifth place last weekend in the William K. Warren Irish Invitational.
Ljungstedt, a senior, shot a 10-over par 82, and Megan Moir, who is competing as an individual this weekend, shot a six-over par 78.
In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each team wore pink during Saturday’s second round as a part of a “Pink Out” promotion.
“Today was also a special day because every team wore something pink in support of breast cancer awareness,” Borst said. “We had pink hats, ribbons and shoelaces. It meant a lot to us to wear the pink today.”
The Cats will close out the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships Sunday with the third round. Kentucky, as a team, is competing against 14 other programs, with five of them ranked in the latest Golf World/NGCA top 50.
Ljungstedt will tee off Sunday at 9:45 a.m., for the Cats. She will be followed by Lott, Rose, Albrecht and Johnson in nine-minute intervals, respectively. Each of the five golfers will begin their rounds on the 10th hole. Moir will begin her round at 10:30 a.m. on the first hole.
