LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team heads south to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships this weekend at Holston Hills Country Club (Par-72, 6,302 yards).
UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst will be sending Betsie Johnson, Ashleigh Albrecht, Ashlee Rose, Heather Lott and Louise Ljungstedt to compete in the tournament. Sophomore Megan Moir will compete as an individual for the Cats.
After playing just one week ago, the Cats are ready to hit the links again for their third tournament of the 2010 fall season.
“We are excited to be on the road again and to play in Knoxville,” Borst said. “It’s been a short turnaround from Notre Dame, but I believe the team will be ready to get some revenge from last week.”
Johnson enters the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships following the highest finish of her career when she came in fifth place at last weekend’s William K. Warren Irish Invitational.
The Cats will compete in the three-round, three-day tournament, against 14 other teams. The Wildcats will face off against Southeastern Conference foes, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Tennessee, the host club, as well as Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Furman, Georgia State, James Madison, Kent State, Notre Dame, Texas Christian, UNC-Greensboro and the University of Texas-San Antonio.
Five of the 15 teams competing are ranked among the top 50 in the Golf World/NGCA poll. Tennessee comes in at No. 24, Ole Miss is No. 27, TCU is No. 35, UNC-G is No. 38 and Arkansas is 42nd.
The tournament will bring Borst back to her alma mater where she led Tennessee to the NCAA women’s golf championships during the 2004-06 seasons.
“We will be playing Holston Hills Country Club this year, which is a course I’ve had experience playing and am very familiar with,” Borst said. “I think this course sets up well for the team and I feel confident in their games to score well on this course.”
The Cats will tee off Friday at 9:45 a.m., from the first hole. Rounds two and three will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday and Sunday, respectively. On Saturday, each team will wear pink for a “Pink Out” promotion in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“I am looking forward to this week and feel we are well prepared for the challenge ahead,” Borst said.
