LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team completed play at the William K. Warren Irish Invitational Sunday with sophomore Betsie Johnson again leading the Cats and finishing the tournament in fifth place.
The Cats, playing in their second tournament of the season, were tested by the famed Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., a course Golf Digest proclaimed one of the best in America.
“Today was a tough day for our team,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “They all tried their hardest, but unfortunately we fell a bit short of our expectations.”
Johnson, who began the tournament with back-to-back one-over par 73s, shot a five-over par 77 to finish the two-day tournament in fifth place. It is the best finish of Johnson’s career.
“I am really proud of Betsie for her top-five finish,” Borst said. “She struggled a bit with her game today, but she pulled through and stayed strong.”
Ashleigh Albrecht shot a six-over par 78 to finish in a tie for 35th place out of the 75 golfers competing.
Senior Louise Ljungstedt, who competed as an individual for the Cats, also shot a six-over par 78 to finish in a tie for 38th place.
Sophomore Heather Lott shot an 11-over par 83 and sophomore Ashlee Rose shot a seven-over par 79. Megan Moir shot an eight-over par 80.
“I know what this team is capable of and we will get there,” Borst said. “We will learn from this experience and keep working hard.”
The Cats will play again in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., next weekend.
