LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 24th-ranked Kentucky volleyball team will complete its weekend road-swing at Georgia, Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. match. Kentucky has captured the last nine wins in the series.
Kentucky (7-6, 1-2) dropped a five-set match to an upstart Auburn squad on Friday night. Freshman Whitney Billings had a career-best eight blocks in the match and four UK players recorded 10 or more kills for the second consecutive match, but it was not enough as the Tigers pulled off the upset with a 15-12 fifth set victory.
Senior Lauren Rapp leads the Wildcats with 2.85 kills per set on .408 hitting in league play. Freshman Elizabeth Koberstein averages 10.40 assists per stanza in her two starts in conference action with UK totaling 11.60 kills per set.
Georgia possesses a 9-5 overall record and is 1-2 in Southeastern Conference action after earning a five-set upset victory over No. 20 Tennessee Friday night. Brittany Northcutt paces the offense for the Bulldogs with 2.80 kills per set, while Valentina Gonzalez totals 2.46 kills on an impressive .404 hitting clip.
Kentucky leads the series with the Bulldogs by a 30-24 margin and has won nine straight in the series. In the last matchup between the squads, Kentucky posted a 3-0 win on Nov. 13, 2009.
Then ranked No. 11 Kentucky earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14) victory at Georgia. With the 3-0 win UK tallied its 14th sweep of the season.
Kentucky charted the win behind a collective team effort. Blaire Hiler had 10 kills in the win. Gretchen Giesler and Becky Pavan tallied nine and eight kills, respectively, while Lauren Rapp struck for seven kills to aid the Wildcat cause. Stephanie Klefot posted seven digs in the win for UK. Giesler led the front line with five blocks.
