LEXINGTON, Ky. – UK senior goalie Sydney Hiance didn’t need much help in recording her 18th career shutout as the Wildcat defense held Evansville to just two shots in a 1-0 win over Evansville.
Hiance tallied just one save in the shutout victory as she moved to within one clean sheet from third on UK’s all-time shutout list.
On the other end of the field it was a different story. It was another dominating offensive performance for the Wildcats in every way, but on the scoreboard. Kentucky outshot Evansville 26-2 and had eight corner kicks to the Purple Aces’ zero. However of the 26 shots, only nine were only goal.
“I think tonight it was about a lot of missed opportunities for us,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “Credit Evansville, they dropped their backline very quickly. We were too content about playing central, and we have to improve on our attack. We have been talking about it, but it has not been happening.”
Natalie Horner put the Wildcats up 1-0 on a header in the 18th minute. Taylor Parker spotted Horner across the field and centered a perfect ball that Horner headed home for the score, her second goal of the season. For Parker, who entered the match ranked 20th in the country in assists, it was her team leading fifth assist of the season.
Evansville threatened to tie the score in the 83rd minute when Ashley VanLandingham was whistled for a foul just outside of the 18-yard box. Evansville’s Vanessa Legault-Cordisco took the free kick and sent a shot just high as it skipped off the crossbar and over the goal.
UK closes out non-conference play on Sunday at home, hosting South Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
UK Postgame Notes
— Taylor Parker moved to a tie for sixth on UK’s all-time freshman assist list with her fifth. The Kentucky freshman assist record is 13 by Karla Nunn in 1993.
— UK’s 26 shots were the most since they attempted 31 shots in a 3-2 win at Mississippi State on Oct. 23, 2008.
— The Wildcats posted 20 shots for the second time this season and are averaging 20.7 shots over the last three games. Kentucky had 21 shots at Louisville, followed by 15 attempts on Sunday against Marshall.
— Parker (4), Caitlin Landis (5) and Danielle Krohn (4) all posted career highs in shots.
