LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team concluded second round play at the Cougar Classic (Par 72 – 6,202 yards), their first tournament of the 2010-11 season.

Sophomore Heather Lott continued her strong play by leading the Cats with the low score of the day for the second consecutive round. Lott followed up her even-par round of 72 on Sunday, with birdies on holes two and three to move to two-under par and one stroke off the first round lead.

Lott finished her second round with a four-over par 76 to put her in a tie for 24th place out of the 110 golfers competing. Lott’s 27 pars through two rounds are tied for the second most in the field, one away from the lead.

Fellow sophomore Megan Moir improved three strokes from her opening round of the season by shooting a five-over par 77. Moir’s 77, which included a birdie on the 444-yard par 5 15th, ties her career low round at Kentucky.

Ashleigh Albrecht also shot five-over par 77 in the second round and currently sits in a tie for 45th place with a score of seven-over par after shooting an opening round 74.

Freshman Liz Breed continues to compete at a high level in her first tournament as a collegiate golfer by shooting a second round six-over par 78. In her second round, Breed birdied the short, 136-yard par three third hole, and the 523-yard par 5 fifth hole.

Sophomore Betsie Johnson improved upon her opening round of 79 with a six-over par 78.

As a team, Kentucky shot a 308 in the second round and currently sits in 14th place with a score of 610. Still, UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst sees a stronger finish lying ahead for the young Cats.

“Unfortunately we didn’t play our best today, but I am confident that everyone will come together and play better tomorrow,” Johansson Borst said. “We will learn from the last two days and build on that for a strong finish.”

Ten of the 21 teams participating in the Cougar Classic competed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and five enter the 2010-11 season ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin Top 50, including No. 19 Florida, No. 25 South Carolina, No. 41 Mississippi and Mississippi State.

The third round will tee off at 8:30 Tuesday morning with a shotgun start.
