LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Heather Lott shot an even-par 72 in the first round of the Cougar Classic to lead the Cats in their season opening tournament. Lott’s 72 tied her collegiate career low when she shot a 72 in the second round of the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup in 2009.

Kentucky traveled south to Hanahan, S.C., and placed two golfers in the top 27 with sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht shooting a two-over par, opening round 74.

Lott, a Baton Rouge, La., native, was consistent throughout her entire round, as she parred each hole on the 6,210-yard course at Yeamans Hall Golf Club.

Albrecht shot an even par 36 on her opening nine, followed by a two-over 38 on the back nine. After opening her round with a bogey on the first, which played as the second most difficult hole on the course, a 393-yard par four, Albrecht birdied the 373-yard par four fifth hole to get back to even.

As a team, Kentucky shot a 302 and stands in 12th place out of the 21 participating teams.

“I think our round today was a good start to the season,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We still have room to improve and we left some shots out there. But we fought hard and I know we’ll have some more putts drop tomorrow.”

Freshman Liz Breed opened her collegiate career with a five-over par 77. After shooting a four-over 40 on the front nine, Breed opened her back nine with a birdie on the 337-yard par four 10th hole. Breed closed out her round with a one-over par 37 on the 3,048-yard back nine.

Sophomores Betsie Johnson and Megan Moir shot a 79 and 80, respectively, in their season opening rounds.

The Cougar Classic, a three-day tournament, will continue Monday with one 18-hole round, and conclude Tuesday with a final 18-hole round shotgun start.

Moir will tee off first for the Cats on Monday at 8:09 a.m., followed by Lott, Breed, Johnson and then Albrecht.

Courtney Gunter of North Carolina leads the 110-player field with an opening round 3-under par 69. North Carolina leads each of the 21 schools in the field.
