LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team opens the 2010-11 season in Hanahan, S.C., in the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston.
The Cougar Classic will be a three-day tournament held at Yeamans Hall Golf Club (6,210 yards, par 72). The event will begin Sunday and conclude Tuesday with one 18-hole round each day with tee times Sunday and Monday and a shotgun start Tuesday.
The tournament will not only mark the beginning of the Cats’ season, but also the beginning of the Golda Johansson Borst era of Kentucky golf. Johansson Borst joins the Cats after serving as an assistant coach for LSU from 2007-10.
“I am ready and excited to get started with the season,” Johansson Borst said. “It’s been a busy summer and I am thrilled to finally travel with my team. The Cougar Classic is a great fall opener for us and I think we are ready to get on the road and play.”
Kentucky will play in the tournament against 20 other schools, including Florida, Mississippi, Mississippi State and South Carolina from the Southeastern Conference.
Johansson Borst will send a young team to the Cougar Classic. Four sophomores in Ashleigh Albrecht, Betsie Johnson, Heather Lott and Megan Moir, and freshman Liz Breed will represent the Cats in the season opening tournament.
“I feel very confident in this young group and I know they will represent UK very well,” Johansson Borst said. “Ashleigh, Betsie and Heather have a great deal of experience playing college golf and I think our freshman, Liz, will adjust very well to playing at the college level. Megan is a redshirt sophomore who has worked really hard on her game this past summer. I’m very confident she will bring a lot to the team this year. I’m proud of all these girls for how hard they have worked to get ready for this first tournament.”
Moir will tee off first for the Cats at noon on Sunday. She will be followed by Lott, Breed, Johnson, and then Albrecht.
The Cats return seven golfers from last season’s team, but are still a young team having just one senior in Louise Ljungstedt.
Kentucky’s second tournament of the season will be in Notre Dame, Ind., for the William K. Warren Invitational on Oct. 2-3.
