LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky rifle team has released its 2010-11 schedule, featuring seven matches at UK’s Barker Hall and trips to TCU, West Point and Ole Miss, it was announced by head coach Harry Mullins on Tuesday afternoon.
“We are very excited about our schedule,” Mullins said. “We will have seven great matches in Lexington and will have the opportunity to compete against some great teams on the road in exciting environments. We will face some tough tests throughout the season but I am excited to see how the team competes against some of the best teams in the nation.”
Kentucky will open its home schedule on Oct. 22, hosting Murray State, before welcoming Army on Oct. 24 at Barker Hall. The Wildcats will continue the home swing through October, hosting Ohio State and N.C. State on Oct. 30 and UT Martin on Oct. 31.
In November, UK will hit the road for a match at the defending NCAA Champion TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas, on Nov. 5. UK will face traditional power Nebraska in Fort Worth on Nov. 6.
Kentucky will then travel to West Point, N.Y., to face first-time opponent Columbus State on Jan. 9, before returning home to face tradition-rich Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 19 in Lexington. UK will then travel to Oxford, Miss., site of the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, for a pair of matches, facing Memphis on Jan. 21 and Ole Miss on Jan. 22.
In February, UK will host West Virginia on Feb. 5 and host the NCAA Qualifying round Feb. 12-13., at Barker Hall. Kentucky will then return to Oxford to compete in the GARC Championships at Ole Miss Feb. 26-27. The Wildcats will wrap up the season at the NCAA Championships March 9-13 in Columbus, Ga.
“We have a very competitive schedule this season,” Mullins said. “Considering that we are competing against six of the seven teams that we saw in last year’s NCAA Championship, we will have our work cut out for us. We will have a combination of young shooters and some veterans that should lead the way. Having the matches grouped together like they are this year will require us to have solid match endurance.”
