GREENSBORO, N.C. –
On the second day of NCAA East Preliminary Round events, the Kentucky track and field team continued the push towards qualifying for the NCAA Championships, being led by senior sprinter Rondel Sorrillo.
On day two of the preliminaries the Kentucky track and field team continued to make strides towards qualifying for the NCAA Championships to be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12.
All-SEC sprinter Rondel Sorrillo secured his position in Eugene, Ore., in the 100m dash while simultaneously tying the Kentucky school record. Sorrillo’s new personal record of 10.05 matches the school record set by Tim Harden in 1995. Also running in the first round of the men’s 200m dash, Sorrillo won his heat with a time of 20.69 and advances to tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Kentucky’s school record holder and nationally ranked competitor Kristin Smith fell just shy of moving on to the finals in the women’s hammer throw thus, eliminating her chance to advance to Eugene, Ore., competition.
Junior Sharif Webb, similar to Smith, just barely missed qualifying for the next round in the men’s 800m run. Webb finished right outside of the 12 advancing spots by coming in 13th with a quarterfinal time of 1:48.02.
Samantha Stenzel competed in the women’s pole vault where she finished in 30th place with a vault of 3.60m (11 feet, 9.75 inches), while Precious Nwokey ran in the women’s 100m hurdles and finished in 27th place with a time of 13.64 (+2.0).
The Cats return to action and for the final day of the preliminary rounds, tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. when Colin Boevers competes in the men’s discus.
